Making a long-distance relationship work while studying abroad
You are about to embark on the experience of your lifetime, that is to go and study abroad. You will be staying in your host country for the following years, which is definitely a great thing, not only because you have the chance to follow your dreams and study the subject you are most interested in, but also because you will experience the amazing student life living in a student accommodation Oxford University location that suits your needs and budget. However, you will leave without your boyfriend/girlfriend, so here are some useful tips to make your relationship work even when you are abroad.
Talk to each other as often as possible
It is said that communication is the key to any relationship, including the long-distance ones. Taking into account that nowadays the Internet allows people from different continents to talk to each other without spending any money, you should take advantage of this. Talk to each other using the Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp, Skype or any other similar app. Use these as much as possible.
Have them plan a visit
Only seeing each other over the Internet might not be enough, especially if you will be staying in your host country for a few years. The best solution to make your long-distance relationship work is to have them plan at least one visit. This will help your relationship more than you would think.
Trust each other
Besides communication, trust is the second most important pillar of any relationship. You have to trust each other in order to make the relationship work while you are abroad. Work on this while you are still in the same city, because it is commonly known that trust is not earned overnight. Whether it is you who has a mild flirtation with another person or it is your partner, it is mandatory to bring it out in the open and talk about it. It is better to discuss it from the very beginning and not to leave it for “later”, because this might alter your relationship.
Having some arguments or even a fight is considered normal and healthy for a relationship, but the moment you are abroad, you will understand that things change a little. If you add in slow internet connection that interrupts your discussion with each other every five minutes or any other technological glitch, you could end up feeling that your long-distance relationship has come to an end. It is important to have patience and understanding when being abroad, especially when an argument begins. Try to express yourself as clearly as possible and to accept that the distance causes some stress in your relationship.
Being abroad does not mean you should stop being loving
Even though you are miles away from your partner this does not mean that you cannot show them how much you love them. Order flowers to be delivered, or even send some love letters, create a video of you two or edit some of your best photos. No matter what you opt for, your partner will definitely appreciate it.
